11. What is intermodal transport?
Intermodal freight transport is a cost-efficient and sustainable logistics method that combines multiple modes of transport, such as trucks, trains, ships, and inland waterways, to move goods seamlessly from point A to point B. The goods remain in the same shipping container throughout the journey, reducing handling requirements, minimizing the risk of damage, and lowering transportation costs.
This makes intermodal transport solutions ideal for long-distance freight shipping, particularly for businesses seeking eco-friendly logistics options. Common examples include using inland shipping for port connections, combined with road transport for last-mile delivery.
As a trusted transportation broker, Gelder Logistics specializes in providing custom intermodal freight solutions tailored to your specific needs. With Gelder Logistics, you benefit from an extensive network, efficient planning, and competitive pricing, ensuring your goods arrive safely and on time.
12. What is the weight of a container?
The weight of a shipping container depends on its type. An empty 20-foot container weighs around 2,200 kg, while a 40-foot container weighs approximately 3,800 kg. For fully loaded containers, the payload capacity matters: a 20-foot container can carry up to 25,000 kg, and a 40-foot container up to 28,000 kg. For heavy loads, specialized high-capacity shipping containers are available. The exact weight depends on the type of container and its cargo.
13. What are the dimensions of a container?
Standard freight containers come in two primary sizes:
- 20-foot container: 6 meters long, 2.4 meters wide, 2.6 meters high. Capacity: 33 m³, payload: 25,000 kg.
- 40-foot container: 12 meters long, 2.4 meters wide, 2.6 meters high. Capacity: 67 m³, payload: 28,000 kg.
For extra space, high cube shipping containers (30 cm taller) are available. Other options include refrigerated containers (reefers) and open-top containers. These container types are ideal for cost-efficient freight transport.
14. How many pallets fit in a container?
The number of pallets in a shipping container depends on pallet size and container type:
- A 20-foot container fits up to 11 Euro pallets (120 x 80 cm) or 9 block pallets (120 x 100 cm) in one layer.
- A 40-foot container fits up to 25 Euro pallets or 21 block pallets in one layer.
By stacking, pallet capacity can double, depending on the weight and height of the cargo. Containers are the go-to solution for efficient palletized freight transport.
15. What happens to container transport after it arrives at the port?
Gelder Logistics takes care of your container transport logistics from start to finish. After arriving at the port, your goods can be transported via inland shipping, often a more cost-effective and eco-friendly transport solution compared to road freight. Inland waterways provide a cheaper and greener option. Gelder Logistics ensures the most time-efficient and cost-effective intermodal freight solution tailored to your needs.
